Cease Fire Investigator
This full-time law enforcement position is primarily responsible for investigating crimes involving gun violence or those that have a nexus to gun violence. The Investigator collects evidence, interviews witnesses, and testifies in court.
The Ceasefire Investigator is a sworn Law Enforcement position that is a non-uniformed Deputy. The King and Queen County Sheriffs Office will provide the Criminal Investigator with a take-home vehicle and employee must follow the vehicle take-home car policy.
Minimum Requirements
Must be at least 21 years of age
Must possess a valid Drivers License
Must have completed high school or have the equivalent of a high diploma.
1 year of law enforcement experience or a BS or BA degree
This position requires Law Enforcement certification.
Requires Court Security and Civil Process certifications
Must obtain Certification in Crime Scene Investigation within 2 years of employment
with the Sheriff's Office.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Investigates crimes involving gun violence or a nexus to gun violence.
Assist with investigations of drug sales and use. The Investigator will be assigned to
serve as a member of the regional drug task force.
Investigates criminal acts such as homicides, sexual assaults, armed robberies, home
invasions, and property crimes such as burglaries.
Collect and use forensic evidence to solve crimes.
Interview informants, suspects, and witnesses to ascertain alibis, clues, time frames,
and possible suspects.
Maintain detailed timely records as required and file paperwork as needed.
Process evidence carefully and ensure it gets sent to the proper department.
Send specimens to the laboratory to be analyzed with the specified timeframe.
Submit fingerprints through the database to obtain matches.
Follow up on all leads during the investigation.
Prepare investigative reports.
Prepare sketches, diagrams, video, and audio recordings.
Communicate to the jury the significance of evidence as it relates to proof.
Maintain an in-depth current knowledge of federal and state statutes and court cases
related to work performed and agency rules and regulations.
Obtain search warrants as needed.
Perform surveillance and monitor suspects.
Analyze laboratory findings.
Exchange information and coordinate activities with other departments within the
Criminal Justice field.
Record physical information about suspects.
Take fingerprints as needed.
Complete all tasks that a Court Security Deputy or a Patrol Deputy normally
performs, as directed.
The position of Ceasefire Investigator is inherently a high-stress and physically demanding position. All sworn staff must complete a basic course and are expected to maintain skills and physical fitness. The King & Queen County Sheriffs Office requires a fit-for-duty exam to be completed prior to hiring.
The following activities are expected of all sworn Criminal Investigators:
Sit or stand for long periods of time for four (4) up to eight (8) hours daily.
Manage a high level of stress for eight (8) up to twelve (12) hours daily.
Bend, reach, climb, and run is often a function completed daily.
Lift 0-25 pounds on a daily basis, lift25-30 pounds often, and lift 50+ pounds
occasionally.
Ability to perform data entry and clerical work for four (4) up to eight (8) hours daily.
Manage the inherent danger of the potential daily risks during arrests using
necessary and reasonable force to take someone into custody.
