exists to build more equitable communities, together. With over 85 years of local impact in eastern Massachusetts, UWMB works with and for communities to build economic prosperity and enable everyone across races and ethnicities to share in the knowledge, wealth and resources available. UWMB believes that the key to unlocking opportunity is uniting people and bringing together individuals, community leaders, corporate partners, legislators, and organizations to build a powerful engine of change.
UWMB has deep relationships with a broad network of partners on the ground. This positions the organization to quickly raise and deploy resources when and where they are needed most, especially in times of crisis. Given Massachusetts has the third largest racial wealth gap in the U.S., UWMB is also uniquely positioned to unite people and unlock opportunities.
Massachusetts is one of the wealthiest states in the country, however there are stark gaps between those who earn the top 20% and those who earn the bottom 20%. Nearly 300,000 people in UWMBs region have incomes that are below the federal poverty rate. More than two-thirds of these individuals live in just 12 cities. To create the most impact, UWMB focuses its efforts on the cities with the highest number of households excluded from financial well-being. To that end, UWMB concentrates its efforts in , which includes Boston,Cambridge, Chelsea, Haverhill, Lawrence, Lowell, Lynn, Malden, Quincy, Revere, Salem and Taunton.
After 85 years of impact in the community, UWMB made some changes, and 2023 was all about putting those changes into action. In Spring 2023, UWMB launched its new approach to community impact in Our New Way Forward, a seven-year plan to advance an economically just region.
UWMBs vision has taken root with 124 carefully chosen partner organizations who share its commitment to community engagement and empowerment. These organizations embody inclusive leadership and are deeply embedded in UWMBs 12 focus communities. Through strategic partnerships and measurable outcomes, UWMB is forging a path toward a region where financial wellbeing is not a privilege but a shared reality.
UWMBs commitment to measurable progress is evident in its focus on enhancing satisfaction in financial wellbeing, fostering emergency savings, alleviating housing cost burdens, expanding access to affordable childcare, empowering the next generation, and narrowing the wealth gap. The next President and CEO of United Way of Massachusetts Bay (UWMB) will lead the operationalization and implementation of its recently launched community impact strategy, centering the entire organization and its resources around building equitable communities.
